Kuniko Yamamoto - Owner of Shiatsu and Remedial Massage Clinic in Bentleigh, near Mckinnon, Melbourne, Victoria

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Kuniko brings a rich blend of Eastern and Western knowledge to her practice. She moved to Melbourne nearly 30 years ago after working as a ski instructor in Nagano, Japan.

Her diverse background includes roles as a Japanese teacher at RMIT, translator, and interpreter in the Japanese media industry.

She has worked in Japanese TV as a coordinator for Grand Slam tennis tournaments. This work has taken her to Paris, London, New York and Tokyo, a rare opportunity to observe top tennis players and different cultures.

Having travelled through Europe and the U.S., Kuniko has always been deeply curious about different cultures and healing practices.

Since becoming a qualified Shiatsu and Remedial Massage Therapist in the year 2000, Kuniko has continuously expanded her skills. She has studied various bodywork techniques like Seitai, Sotai, Alexander Technique, and Body-Mind Centering, in Japan and Australia. During the pandemic, she also became a certified yoga teacher. She is currently studying Hypnotherapy and Focusing to better understand the mind-body connection.

What is the Difference Between Shiatsu and Remedial Massage?

Oriental Therapy, Shiatsu, is deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM.) Shiatsu uses finger pressure along meridians (energy pathways) to balance the body’s natural energy, or Ki. This gentle yet effective method allows the body to heal itself by easing imbalances and encouraging relaxation. The techniques I use involve rhythmic pressure and stretching, targeting energy blockages that may be causing discomfort.

Remedial Massage, on the other hand, focuses on specific musculoskeletal issues through targeted techniques like deep tissue work and myofascial release. These methods address physical pain, improve mobility, and contribute to overall well-being.

Integrating Shiatsu into Remedial Massage: A Holistic East-West Approach

Blending traditional techniques with modern understanding can offer profound benefits. Kuniko’s innovative approach integrates Shiatsu with Remedial Massage, offering a unique East-West perspective on bodywork that emphasises deep change without the reliance on hard pressure. This fusion is particularly beneficial for those who experience discomfort from prolonged periods of sitting, such as office workers

Yamamoto Genki-Do Clinic - Remedial Massage in Bentleigh, Melbourne, Victoria

Hello, my name is Kuniko and welcome to my clinic.

By blending Shiatsu and remedial massage, I’ve developed a holistic approach that draws on the strengths of both practices. This East-West fusion addresses discomfort, especially for clients who suffer from the effects of prolonged sitting.

  • Gentle Yet Powerful: I use Shiatsu’s gentle pressure and stretching alongside remedial massage’s more intense techniques. This allows me to reach deep tissue without needing aggressive force, reducing the risk of discomfort or strain during treatment.
  • Balancing Energy and Muscle Relief: My practice emphasises both energy balance and muscle relief. By applying Shiatsu’s meridian-based approach to remedial massage, I target the root causes of tension and pain, enhancing energy flow and delivering more lasting relief.
  • Holistic Healing: I’ve always believed in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. My integration of Shiatsu and remedial massage helps me address both physical discomfort and emotional stress. This balanced approach leads to noticeable improvements in my clients’ overall well-being.
  • Personalised Massage: I tailor each session based on your individual needs. By blending Shiatsu’s gentle pressure with specific remedial techniques, I can target areas of tension more effectively, offering you a personalised and comprehensive healing experience.

What is Ki?

In ancient Chinese medicine, the character 氣 represents Qi, or universal energy, which flows throughout the body and the world around us. In Japan, it is called Ki, a concept central to practices like Shiatsu Massage and Reiki. More than just energy, Ki is the vital life force that affects our atmosphere, feelings, willpower, and overall well-being. At Yamamoto Genki Do Clinic, Kuniko’s approach integrates this ancient wisdom to help clients restore balance and vitality.

Understanding the Modern Dilemma

As someone who has worked with many clients facing the challenges of modern desk life, I’m acutely aware of the toll prolonged sitting takes on the body—poor posture, back pain, and muscular tension being common issues. My approach is designed to address both the physical strain and the underlying energy imbalances that contribute to these problems.

By integrating Shiatsu and remedial massage, I help alleviate pain, improve posture, and restore balance to your body. My goal is to not only provide immediate relief but also support your long-term health by addressing the root causes of discomfort.
